Can You Compost Cooked Food?
Yes, with care. Plain cooked vegetables, grains and beans compost fine in small amounts. Leftovers with meat, dairy or lots of oil attract pests and smell, so bury plain food in the center and send the rest to bokashi or municipal collection.

How to compost cooked food
Scrape plain cooked vegetables, grains and beans into the center of the pile, bury them 8–12 in (20–30 cm) deep and cover with browns. Keep quantities small relative to the pile. A hot pile or closed bin handles cooked food better than a cold, open heap.
Check whether your city collects food scraps; most municipal programs accept all cooked food because their large piles run hot.
What goes wrong
Cooked food smells stronger than raw scraps as it rots and is more attractive to rats, raccoons and dogs. If you notice smells or digging, switch cooked leftovers to bokashi. Very salty food in quantity isn't good for the pile either.
Worm bins and bokashi
Worm bin: Worms can take small amounts of plain, cooled cooked vegetables, but skip anything oily, salty or with meat or dairy.
Bokashi: Bokashi was made for cooked leftovers, including meat and dairy, so use it for mixed plate scrapings.
This counts as a green. Adding a lot of it? Check the balance with the compost mix calculator.

Frequently asked questions
Can you compost leftovers with meat in them?
Not in a backyard pile. Meat attracts pests and smells. Use bokashi or municipal organics collection.
Does cooking food change how it composts?
Cooked food breaks down quickly, but it's soft and dense, so it clumps and attracts animals more than raw scraps. Mix it with dry browns.
Can you compost salty food?
Small amounts are fine. Brine, cured leftovers and other very salty food are better kept out of garden compost.
